Hasanuddin University actively implements a plastic waste reduction policy within the campus environment. One of the main policies is the a Circular Letter No. 09246/UN4.1/KM.01.03/2024 on the Prohibition of single-use drinking water packaging and plastic bags and the Circular Letter No. 05501/UN4.16/PL/04/2024 on the Use of tumblers, which require all members of the academic community to reduce single-use plastic consumption across all campus units and facilities. This policy is further supported by the Circular Letter No. 28720/UN4.1/KM.01.03/2024 on Rector’s Regulation the Protection and Prevention of Water and Land Pollution and the Rector’s Regulation No. 11/UN4.1/2022 on the Guidelines for Spatial and Building Management of the Campus emphasizing the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, environmentally friendly waste management, and plastic pollution prevention.
In addition to formal policies, Unhas students have initiated various plastic waste reduction and management programs, including:
- Waste Bank and Recycling Education Programs: Students from the Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries manage a campus waste bank, educating the academic community and local residents on waste sorting, recycling into ecobricks, and producing organic fertilizer(faculty of forestry;faculty of marine science and fisheries;PKSE).
- Plastic Waste Utilization into Useful Products: Students participating in thematic community service programs (KKN) transform plastic waste into paving blocks and educate village communities on environmental awareness (paving blocks; educate village communities).
- Microplastic and Food Packaging Safety Education: Public Health students educate housewives about the dangers of microplastics in household products and the safety of food packaging (microplastic; food packaging safety).
- Innovative Waste Management and Incentive Programs: Students organize programs such as exchanging waste for mobile credit and implementing waste sorting in schools to support a green campus (exhanging waste for mobile; waste sorting).
- Recycling and Ecobrick Education in Schools and Communities: The Center for Environmental Studies and Unhas students from the Faculty of Public Health conduct recycling education programs to turn plastic waste into ecobricks, along with waste management demonstrations in Bonto-Bonto Village (ecobrick; plastic waste).
Through the combination of formal policies and student-led initiatives, Hasanuddin University has successfully reduced plastic usage on campus, increased community awareness of sustainable waste management, and supported the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems.
