Have policies to ensure that food on campus is sustainably farmed
Sustainable Campus Food Policy and Implementation at Hasanuddin University
Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) has a formal policy on the origin of food sold in campus canteens. Rector’s Circular No. 09834/UN4.1/KM.01.03/2024 on Food Served within Hasanuddin University, dated 7 March 2024, replaced Rector’s Circular No. 41698/UN4.1/KM.01.03/2022 of 30 December 2022. The 2024 circular remains in force and is publicly available on the UNHAS SDGs Center website.
Addressed to all canteen operators within UNHAS, the circular sets four requirements:
Food from aquatic ecosystems must be caught in an environmentally friendly way, in line with Law No. 31/2004 on Fisheries.
Agricultural products, including rice and vegetables, must come from environmentally friendly farming, in line with Law No. 18/2012 on Food.
Livestock meat must meet slaughterhouse requirements under Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 13/Permentan/OT.140/1/2010.
Fishing and slaughtering must not use equipment that is hazardous to health.
Food is also farmed sustainably on campus. At Kampung Rimba, in the Faculty of Forestry area of the Tamalanrea Campus, a team led by a Faculty lecturer and including students grows oyster mushrooms in baglogs made from waste sawdust, using forest-derived spawn cultivated in artificial media that resemble the mushrooms’ natural habitat. The site produces about 3–4 kg of fresh mushrooms a day, sold mainly to the UNHAS academic community and to residents around the campus.
The Faculty of Forestry also keeps hundreds of bee colonies, including native stingless bees (Tetragonula biroi, T. fuscobalteata, T. sapiens, and T. laeviceps) and Apis cerana, at the Awani Bee Garden, the Faculty’s Rimba forest area, and the UNHAS Educational Forest at Bengo-Bengo, Maros, a Special Purpose Forest Area (Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus, KHDTK), producing honey, bee bread, and royal jelly. The Faculty promotes environmentally friendly harvesting of trigona (stingless bee) honey, which it taught to the Moncongjai Forest Farmers Group in the Educational Forest on 27 July 2025.
