Educational Programmes on Ecosystems, Wild Flora, and Fauna for Local and National Communities
Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) offers educational programmes on terrestrial ecosystems, including wild flora and fauna, for local and national communities, in line with SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The main venue is the UNHAS Educational Forest at Bengo-Bengo, Maros, a Special Purpose Forest Area (Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus, KHDTK), located in Limapocoe Village, Cenrana District, and managed by the Faculty of Forestry. Besides serving as a site for practicums, research, training, and community service, the Educational Forest is open to the public for nature recreation based on environmental education. Visitors and community groups can learn about forest conservation and observe endemic plants and wildlife habitats in their natural setting.
Field learning is combined with community engagement. On 2 December 2025, Forest Conservation students held a wildlife practicum in the Karaenta Forest of Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park, observing signs of animal presence and the ecology of the endemic Sulawesi primate Macaca maura in its natural habitat. The practicum was paired with community service: students cleaned up litter along the Karaenta trails, identified litter-prone spots in the nature tourism area, and gave short educational talks to visitors on protecting the conservation area.
