Educational and Community Outreach Programmes on the Sustainable Management of Land for Agriculture

Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) runs educational programmes and outreach on the sustainable management of agricultural land for farmer groups, village officials, and other residents, helping them manage land resources productively while reducing soil and ecosystem degradation. Lecturers and students deliver the training directly in villages through community service and the Thematic Student Community Service Programme (Kuliah Kerja Nyata Tematik, KKN-T). Participants include farmer groups, livestock farmers, village officials, and other residents.

Training in eco-friendly cultivation and land management. Key programmes include:

  • Education on efficient and precise fertilisation in Majannang Village, reported in April 2025, which helps farmers cut excessive chemical inputs on their land.
  • ALLOTANI (Aktualisasi Sanggar Tani dalam Mendorong Diversifikasi Pangan Berkelanjutan Berbasis Smart Agriculture, or Activating Farmers’ Studios to Promote Sustainable Food Diversification through Smart Agriculture), a five-month programme run by a UNHAS student organisation and launched on 21 July 2025 in Borikamase Village, Maros, which set up a young farmers’ studio with the village government to build self-reliance in sustainable food production.
  • Training in eco-friendly pest control and the production of photosynthetic bacteria for farmers in Bongki Lengkese Village, East Sinjai District, Sinjai Regency, held by students of the 113th KKN-T wave on 24 January 2025, which improves soil quality and offers biological alternatives to synthetic pesticides.
  • A collaboration between the Agricultural Engineering Study Programme, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and Eratani on Alternate Wetting and Drying irrigation in Gowa Regency in September 2025, which teaches farmers to manage paddy-field water efficiently and reduce irrigation water use.

Land-use planning and post-harvest waste management education. Sustainable land management starts with accurate spatial data. On 29 August 2025, lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering trained residents and farmer groups in Baranti District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, to map rice fields with a web-based geographic information system, producing digital maps that each farmer group can use to monitor the condition of its land. In August 2025, students of the 114th KKN-T wave worked with village officials and community representatives to prepare a land-use map for Buae Village, Sidenreng Rappang, together with technical guidelines on land-use management that the village government can use to regulate land use.

The outreach also covers post-harvest land care. On 7 August 2025, KKN-T students trained farmers in Solo Village to process rice straw into livestock and fish feed instead of burning it in the fields, a practice that damages soil organisms and releases carbon emissions. The training, held in Angkona District, East Luwu Regency, for farmer groups, livestock farmers, and village officials, also promoted a circular agricultural economy. Lecturers from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology complemented this with training in carrot and potato processing and in the use of digital applications for farmers in Biring Panting Village, Gowa Regency, on 11 October 2025.

Together, these programmes cover the main stages of sustainable agricultural land management, from land-use planning and soil fertility to irrigation efficiency and the management of crop residues.
